Amy wanted to share her learning with her family today!

Amy felt proud about her work today and wanted to share her learning.

She enjoyed finding all the ways to show 16, and found the patterns of the numbers fun to show.

Malo Amy, we are very proud of the way you completed all activities and extended yourself to include two digit subtraction.

Logan’s even number

Logan wants to show what 8,736 looks like.
It is an ev en number because of the ones. The six ones can be put into two equal groups.

Group Rua: our Maths language.

We are learning about the language of mathematics and what equal means and how we can show this.

We now know the equal sign = means the same as.  Both sides have to be the same or equal.

We have been using the words half and the fraction sign to show our equal groups.

Maths is so connected!!  It was nice to spend time exploring all the ways we can make these connections.

Kai Pai Group!

Group Wha:

Playing 'first to subtract to get to 0':

Players:
2 people with two different colour felts

We start with the total of 10 and each person has a turn to subtract
Either 1,2,3.

The first to get to 0 wine.

Game of the Week: Got it

Got It is an adding or subtraction game for two players. You can play against a friend. It is a version of a well known game called Nim.
Start with the Got It target 23.
Of start at 23 and subtract to get to zero.

The first player chooses a whole number from 1 to 4 .
Players take turns to add or subtract a whole number from 1 to 4 to the running total.
The player who hits the target of 23 or 0 wins the game.

Play the game several times.
Can you find a winning strategy?
Can you always win?

Does your strategy depend on whether or not you go first?

Group Wha: house fractions

Our Maths group has 4 people:
1 takahe
1 kea
1 hohoi
1 tui

What fraction are in each house?

Group Toru: house Fractions

Group Rua: Game of Totals:

We are now modifying the game?? How would you do this?

Group Rua: playing ‘game of totals’

The aim is the first person to make 10.

Each person uses the numbers 1,2,3 only.

We notice there is a pattern

The first person to reach '6' will always...

Group Tahi: our fraction model by Chantelle

Group Tahi: house fractions

Here we are working out what houses we are in.

As you can see we have 5 people altogether - that is our whole

We have 4 people in Takahe and 1 person in Hoiho

We can also say 4/5 are Takahe and 1/5 is Hoiho

Which is the biggest fraction??

Yes it's 4/5ths :-)

Group Ono- multiplication and division connections

Today I learnt about equal sharing or division.
I got confused and now I remember how to use it.  I remember the problem about the 21 fejoias and collecting them in groups of 3.   I knew that there were 7 groups altogether.  21 divided into groups of 3 and that is 7.
21 divided by 3 = 7
or
3 x 7 = 21

'Groups of' (times) and division are connected together!!!

Group Rima:

What makes a good mathematician?

Group Toru: multiplication

Here group Toru is using the book 'one is a snail' to find how many legs it would take to make 28.

These are the girls favourite combinations- they found over 5 different ways.

I am proud to see them using multiplication instead of repeated addition and finding a variety of ways. Keep it up girls!

Group Ono: playing Karlia's game

Karlia shared a game; we all wrote 1-10 in a pyramid shape. We then each asked a question and could cross out the number if it was the answer. Some great questions asked..
what would you ask?

Group Tahi: making houses out of our number of the day

Here we are using our place value knowledge to create a house. Look at all the different 429 houses. Well done girls!

Tuesday 31 October 2017

Group wha: Choosing our learning goal

Group Toru:

Here we are making 429 and getting 10 more.
Today we learnt more than in maths means plus or addition. The number gets bigger. The tens change to make 439.

Next Ten game: New Group Tahi:

Get a card and find out how many to the nearest 10. See how many ways you can write and say the combinations.

When you have mastered this game make it two digits with two cards.

President of NZ Mathematics Association Visit

Here Mrs Frankcom is talking to us about our Mathematical learning in Room 23. She was impressed to see we had a growth mindset and enjoyed Mathematics almost as much as her 😀😀

She also awarded a prize to Mrs Madden for her teaching! It's like a big sticker for teachers- we are always life long learners.

A very special day indeed!

Welcome to Term 4

This week and next is exciting as we hear the students voice and see how much progress they have made!!

This is one of the best parts of any teacher's job!

Please celebrate in their success and progress.

Group Tahi: our google slides

Presenting our google slides to show our fraction bar models.

Group Rua:

Using a number wheel to share our number knowledge and make our connections.

Tuesday 26 September 2017

Group Wha: Making Connections:

How do fractions relate to multiplication and division?

Wonderful conclusions! Thank you Poppy who reminded us division is just equal
Sharing and that is what fractions are.

Special Interest : Introducing factorials

As part of finding the numbers 1- 20 using only four 4's .  We were introduced to Factorials.

Factorials use the exclamation mark (!)
ie  4!

a " factorial of n items gives you the number of ways you can arrange the given items."

So 4! means = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24

For example: If there are two coins - you can arrange them in two different ways - like wise if you have 3 coins - there are 6 ways you can arrange them.
If you have four coins you can arrange then in ___ ways?

Group Tahi and Wha: bar models

These groups have made their own bar models using google slides.
They used the shape tools to create and measure their bar models. Today the whole was 24. We know our fractions all depend on our whole.

Very proud team!!

Special Interest Question

Can you quarter a triangle?

If so how? If not why not?

Complete a drawing and send it to Mrs Madden.

Group Toru: Jaymee showing a fraction wall

Special interest: more cookies ....

Here is our last group who divided the recipe into thirds and created their smartie biscuit.

Special interest: making four 4's

Here are all our solutions.
Ka pai to Robert who went home and found his own solutions!!

Special interest Ono - Tuesday

Here we are making smartie cookies and banana clusters. We worked as a group to decide on who was bringing which ingredients. We then had to divide our recipe into thirds or halves as some groups forgot their ingredients.

We then designed and made containers to hold our cookies.
Using nothing but an A4 piece of paper.
